Sustainable Design

What is sustainable design? Similar to green building and green architecture, sustainable design is an approach to construction that emphasizes environmental conservation. This is a broad statement that includes many, many ideas from environmental sensitivity to more typical conservation measures.

With greater and greater awareness of the climate crisis over the last few years, more and more people are turning to green building and sustainable design concepts in their building. Architects are thinking more and more about sustainable design. And at long last, it seems to me that the general public is starting to be concerned with green design concepts. Sure, their motivation is purely financial, but it has long been predicted that sustainable design concepts would not really take hold until there was a business case based on dollars and sense.

As the price of oil, gas and heating fuels continue to increase, I predict that sustainable design will only increase in popularity. It will appeal to both the fiscal-minded and the environmentally conscious. In any case, it will result in more green architecture and stronger movement toward conservation of our natural resources - while saving home owners money. All good.
