Search engine ranking

In search engine optimization (SEO), people are always asking about how to improve their search engine ranking. In fact, that's the entire point of SEO. The idea is to position your site so that you can improve search rankings.

Don't know what a search engine ranking is? Well, it's the order in which Google (mostly) shows the websites in their database. See, Google now has over 1 trillion web pages in their database. When you search on a phrase, the database has to decide which ones to show you. There are only 10 positions on the first page, so a choice must be made. This is known as search engine ranking.

Obviously, the websites at the top get the most traffic. Thus the entire SEO indsutry has been born to help people get positioned near the top. They want that search engine ranking position that will give them the most surfers from the search engine. SEO is the business of helping people get there.
