Rochester NY

Rochester NY is a mediumly sized city in Western New York state. On the shores of Lake Ontario, Rochester NY is best known for being the home to Kodak and Xerox. Both were large corporateions in their day, employing large numbers of professionals and blue collar workers in the city.

Both companies have seriously declined since their hayday. As a result, Rochester NY has also experienced a decline. Population, which had been growing steadily since World War II, started to decline in the 1980's. There are several major reasons for this. First, as mentioned, two of the major corporate employers in Rochester NY started to reduce their workforce. Second, the cost of travel became cheaper and people started to migrate to the Southwest and South. This migration of population South and West is not particular to Rochester NY. Most of the "rust belt" cities have seen this same pattern.

So what is special about Rochester NY. Despite the decline in population, there are many interesting facts about this city. It is consistently rated as for the high quality of living. This comes from several areas. First, Rochester is rich in arts and music. Home to the Eastman School of Music, there are many concerts, active theater and many other cultural experiences. There are several major universities in the city, including the University of Rochester and RIT. The city sits on the shores of Lake Ontario, which provide recreation and beauty.
